Pattie Burnley papers : letters, 1864-1865.

This collection consists of 31 items written to Pattie Burnley, of Frankfort, Kentucky, from prison camps between 1864 and 1865. The letters were written by prisoners at Johnson's Island, Camp Chase, Fort Delaware, Rock Island, McLean Barricks, Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, and Camp Douglas among others. They describe the conditions, food, and daily life of prisoner of war camps. Correspondents include Major General Edward Johnson, W.R. Methvin, J.W. McDonald, J.B. Foster, John T. Postlethwaite, William A. Masters, and J. Barton Lyons. The letters from Major General Johnson to Miss Burnley (Aug. 2, 1864 to May 16, 1865) trace his prisoner of war experiences at Fort Delaware, Johnson's Island, and Fort Warren. Johnson was Miss Burnley's cousin. A three page poem is also included in this collection. There is a one page introduction entitled, "Stonewall Jackson as Sentinel."
